Doing Something Wrong??

Its been a few days since I posted and its mostly due to me reflecting on why Ive lost all the punishers and vengeances that I have. Now, I know I am lacking some skills. They arent all 5s, but most that I need are 4. The only thing I can think of why I am losing is that the people Im fighting are all so much older characters than me or if they are younger, just entirely focused on their pvp skills.

At risk of providing too much info about myself, I am providing my API for analisys and advice on wtf my issue has been, if it isnt my fighting higher focused sp pilots; because I seriously do not know why I am losing. I keep tranversals/speed within tracking range, I am within optimals usually, and nothing is wrong with my fit that I know of (outside using ECM lately instead of an AB)

Three days until Motion Prediction 5 is complete, then I think Ill go assault ships 5 to slightly increase resists, or Hull Upgrades 5 to fit an EANM2 finally.

Flying Bricks and Other Things

Yay, Ive finally acquired enough funds to get two Vengeances with a nifty fit. I also have enough left over to fit a few punishers if I need to fall back on those. I chose to finally leave H.UNG. Several reasons why can be attributed to this choice. Things like my gameplay style basically going pure pvp now. I dont want to mine unless I really need to. Making my own riggings, ships and modules is pretty handy, so mining wont be eliminated from my gameplay entirely, just hopefully reduced.

Also, with the fall of the NC, WIDOT alliance is becoming a corp part of the GSF. Nothing against Goonswarm on my end. H.UNG's home is now somewhere out in Fade; with me in Molden Heath, I dont want to move out to nullsec again just yet. And finally, I never visited the H.UNG forums, rarely read the corp emails (due to it being mostly conversations that could have been private) and I just was not part of H.UNG. Fleet ops were often for mining and some pvp once in awhile, but I was almost never available for them, so thats an issue on my part, not theirs. Overall though, I really enjoyed being around the people of Wildly Inappropriate and Hysterically Unforgiving. Almost all of them answered questions when I asked and when completely lost, nudged in the right direction to find the info for myself. Great group of people that I learned a bit from.

Now, on the to the exciting stuff! I fought a Dramiel. I get really bored of looking for people to fight, scanning them down and such after 3 or 4 hours of roaming unsuccessfully. So I tend to ask in local if anyone wants to fight. So far, its worked out better than roaming. However, one thing that bothers me with doing this is that the opponent knows what ship Im flying and basically that Im armor tanked. They know how to prepare for how to beat me. With surprising an opponent, they dont and cant counter on the fly. So I am going to attempt in the future to be more persistant in my roaming and figure out some ways to lure people to me that I want to fight.

So with my Dramiel fight, I had shouted in local. Got an offer for a 1v1 and accepted. We fleeted up and met at a safe. After looking at this opponents history, I knew he would have a great advantage over me with skill points, being an early 2007 character. Also, being a Dramiel, I already had the attitude that Id lose against a ship like that. Fitting my best stuff in hopes of pulling something out of a hat, we began our duel.

When I warped in, I warped to zero to attempt to set range throughout the fight. Scramming and webbing immediately, I turned on my guns and nos. The Dramiel quickly chewed through my shields as expected. He hit my armor, I started my repper. My Navy crystals werent doing much to him, so I set my range to about 2k instead of the 1300. I hoped a wider arc would help. It did, but not enough to help me. So I aligned, preparing to lose my first Vengeance. Then, I popped my secret weapon that no opponent thus far has expected on my fit: ECM.

It scrambled the Dramiel's targeting on the first cycle, turning off his guns AND warp scram on me. It took me a second to notice, as my armor came back from structure, but once I did, I was quickly hitting the warp to shortcut key. Yeah, about this new UI..... If the overview isnt the focus, then shortcut keys like warp to and align to DO NOT WORK. Fun little bug, yes? Well, in the heat of combat, it wasnt. Luckily, I had clicked a stargate and with it as my select action window focus, hit the button to warp out. Also luckily, the Dramiel pilot was like "wtf, how did you get away?" in fleet chat.

Apparently, ECM is an unconvential setup and even an experienced pilot can get thrown off track. I was in structure, and Im sure he thought he was lagging when his guns stopped shooting and his target was cleared. So, ECM is a great tool, at the loss of an AB, I didnt mind.

My rifter fight was against a similar aged opponent, but he had just got back from a small gang killing a drake, so I offered to only fight to structure as he was fit for webbing and logistical stuff I spose. Anyhow, I only went ahead to fight this guy because I wanted to see if I could tank a rifters dps, and I was definately able to tank this Rifters, even though he wasnt setup for it. I popped him to structure and turned off my lasers. With lasers off, nos, web, scram, dc, and repper going, I was somewhat cap stable around 40-50%. I dont have the missile skills to take advantage of the weapon bonus of a Vengeance, but the cap stability made me feel good about my fit and will only improve as I increase my support skills.

So I quickly learned today that support skills are a massive help. The Dramiel pilot said afterwards he had maxed all gunnery skills, explaining how he deftly defeated my armor. In this fight though, I was able to control and set the range, very good for the gatling lasers, as I did not go over my optimal and into falloff range. My rifter fight was more of a confidence boosting fight after getting handidly defeated by the Dramiel, with nothing to learn here except that I need to invest some time towards increasing cap stability skills.

Great past couple days in my opinion.

Outage

Ive had some issues with my country connection to the web explaining why I missed a post on Friday.

When able, Ive just been missioning and mining to get my standings up a bit more and to rebuild funds lost. Not much going on atm except carebearing it up. During my time doing this, Ive thought about getting 4 more accounts trained up to hulk pilots. Six hulks and an orca pilot will bring in some nice funds to fund my pvp and big losses that inevitably occur. From new toon, training some essential support and drone skills, will take about 90 days. With this in mind, I will most likely activate both my hulk pilots, dust off my high sec Orca, and mine with my three accounts until each of the other four are able to fly a retriever with strip miners.

With six hulks eventually, I should be able to fill an orca every 24 minutes. Not as quick as Id like, but I also dont feel like paying a lot of money to double the amount of hulks. I should be good to go with my 7 accounts to fund a plex for each one each month as well as fund my pvp. Once each alt has a hulk, I can train their support skills more, eventually selling them on the character bazaar, but Im not sure on that idea.

So yeah, nothing much going on right now.

Massive Losses

Due to the outages yesterday, I didnt get much accomplished. I started out in nullsec, flying my last ship, a Slicer, into high security space. Well, that ship didnt last too long as I lost it to a group of 3 or people in interdictors and such. I had jumped and tried to wait out my session timer, hoping they'd move on and hadnt noticed me. Didnt work out as planned.

Slicer Loss

This goes to show that even old friends can quickly become enemies, showing no indifference to old alliances.

I escaped with my pod and docked up, getting a rookie ship to finish my journey out of 0.0 space. I spent a day or so in Jita stocking up on new implants and adding new ones. Ive only got a day left in training, so I bought three Vengeances and an A-type small repper. I figure I would have tried to fight that rifter with a higher quality one and might be able to get him down. As chance would have it, I made it all the way from Jita to Gelfiven, where I unloaded my new bpo's, implants and random accessories. I decided to bring my 3 ships and repper to Oddelulf where I have setup my staging point.

I chose this spot on the low sec side of the gate to avoid having to go back to high sec to reship when I lose one and avoid any gate camps there might be. Well this is one time where I should have been more cautious, because as I jumped to the Oddelulf gate, I saw a yellow hurricane. Stupid bastards, I should not have jumped through the gate as I lagged instantly with my session timer and by the time I caught up, my ship had blown up. I made it out with my pod in tact, barely, and proceeded to cry like a baby.

Hauler Loss
This was an exspensive loss for me, nearly 100 million in assests. Time to mine, because this was a huge loss. Damn gate campers.

Reorganization

After the eventfull weekend I had, Ive decided to only post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. My single posts get rather large in story and I need to learn to trim it down some so its not so much a wall of text. I feel limiting the days I post combined with how much activity Ive had recently (if I can keep it up) will provide plenty of posts and help me in learning to cut the fat out.

For a quick addition, I was asked to help out in Branch to destroy an SBU the Russians had placed. We destroyed two of them in EQi, and there were other fleets taking down some as well I heard. After I ran out of ammo (because I didnt have any extras, I never use up a set of crystals) I got sent to scout while the rest of the fleet took down the SBU. Not like my Slicer was helping much anyways, compared to the carriers and Abaddons. Either way, it was a fun quick experience and I felt like I helped, no matter how little.

Close, but no Cigar!

So I forgot to grab my armor reppers again, and I just didnt feel like jumping all over the place. I saw Aeth in local, and I wanted to fight him again. Yet you cant continue going to each fight with the same fit every time and expect to win. You gotta toss in that curve ball once in awhile. So thats what I did, by fitting a Ladar Jammer. I left the reppers out, dropped my web and added the jammer + an extra plate. This worked out well for me, as when Aeth warped in on me, I was already moving at full speed, ready to get orbiting.

Starting out with scorch, our range was extended for a few seconds making them worthwhile. Quickly enough though, he got closer. For the first time, I was paying more attention to my speed and his transversal in my overview, noticing he was close to my cap at .34. So I slowed myself down and tighted the orbit, hoping his tracking wouldnt be as good. Well, with missiles and autocannons, thats nigh impossible.

As the fight chugged on, my jammer was making a very signifcant difference in the fight. It would jam every other cycle, with it getting lucky and jamming two cycles in a row one time. I beat down his shields quickly, and as I started into his armor, he was getting into mine also. Slow and steady wins the battle, unless your opponent is a Rifter and he flies out of point range. Even overheating my guns and the scram didnt make enough of a difference as I saw our range number expanding. And poof, he was gone.

Now I didnt get the kill this time, but I also did not lose my ship. Go me! Baby steps and small improvements right? Well, I need a web or an AB to keep up so that this doesnt happen again. Which means I need that 3rd mid slot. Vengence is lookin pretty damn good at this point in time, once I have the skills to fly it that is. GF'ing Aeth, he claimed to be training for a wolf or jaguar in the next week-ish. Works out well, as I should be able to fly a Vengence by then also, so we agreed we should fight then again to see how my ecm fit will work out.

Afterwards, another Hatchery player had wanted to fight me. This guy wanted to use his Thrasher, a T1 destroyer. Well, ok, I need some above class fights even though the idea of losing a ship wasnt sitting too well with me. I didnt change fits, just docked and repaired, warping out to meet him. I broke through his shields, but I was already low in armor by that time. Scroch crystals came in handy with their range, but the dessie was able to set range at about 10km, slightly outside my optimal, affecting damage. I should have stayed out at the 10km instead of trying to get closer, because as I got lower in ehp, I got close enough to get in scram range. Which of course, caused me not to be able to get back out of range before my ship blew up and I got out with my pod in tact.

Take Away Things
So I just had two very good fights, imo. I learned that if you dont have a repper handy, an ecm is almost as good. I was cap stable throughout the rifter fight and I even broke his armor tanking. He only got away due to my punisher being a brick in space and his higher speed. As he warped out, I think he was at half structure. Lucky, cuz one more volley woulda got him.

As for the Thrasher fight, well, not much to say that I learned other than stay out of scram range. I had broke his shield tanking with my scorch at 10km-ish. I think if I would have had my repper, I may have gotten him at least into structure. Also, he had been in fleet as Aeth and I were talking about my ecm fit, so he had planned accordingly with an ECCM, causing my jammer to be useless. That in itself is something to take away; pre-emptive knowledge of the fight is extremely useful and can definately be used to your advantage.

Punisher vs Rifter, Again....

So Ive been pretty active posting all my fights. I dont like saving my posts for certain days but the thought on doing so has been tempting; if only to condense the less exciting parts. Anyhow, I decided to log in and get situated with a few things today. I got my 5 Punishers built, buying enough supplies to fit all of them. Tossed it all in my awesome Bestower and went out to Oddelulf, home of "The Hatchery." Id had a few nice comments back and forth with a few of them, so Ive decided to stay in this area for awhile.

After getting my stuff setup, I decided to probe down some people. It wasnt working in my favor as they were moving around too much and too quick for me to get a 100% lock on. I switched out to my Punisher, and asked in local if anyone was up for a 1v1. A person new to EVE accepted after some hesitation, due to being so new. I convinced him I was flying a t1 frig as well and am still not very good at pvp, losing several ships in the process. So we fleeted up, I undocked, and warped to a safe while he got ready. I had forgotten to even show info on this pilot in my glee of excitement at another fight.

Well, it took him a minute or two to get out, guess he was repairing or something. Either way, I wasnt really paying attention and was talking to him in a private convo. I wished him gl, claiming I might need it more than him with my recent luck, laughing it off together. He warped in, I spammed my lock and orbit buttons, starting out at about 10km with Scorch crystals. With a web and a scram, I was a floating brick once he webbed me, and range quickly closed into the 1500-2km range. He was apparently armor tanked as I ripped his shields apart in these few seconds.

In these few seconds, Tlweken had been probing me down. I had been sitting in the same safe waiting for my challenger to arrive. The slicer popped in, and quickly destroyed my shields. With both a rifter and a slicer webbing and scramming me, I wasnt going anywhere. With this being a 1v1 challenge, and my knowledge of The Hatchery honoring them, I lol'd in local saying thats not nice. Quickly enough, Tlweken realized he had jumped in on a fight and apologized, warping out. I redocked, repaired and came back out to finish the rifter, who had full shields again. (I suppose he docked up as well for a refresh)

Switching to INMF faction crystals this time, I attempted to get orbit set at a range and speed suitable for my new setup. With trading out one of my trimark rigs for a tracking enhancement one, my tracking was boosted a nice 15% more. Trading a second trimark rig for an energy weapon damage increasing rig (10% boost) I was setup pretty good this round to deal a fast moving armor tanked Rifter. Soon enough, his shields were gone again and I hit his armor, slowly chewing into it. Once or twice, I saw it boost back up from his repper, but my Nos put an end to that quick. As he reached structure, I hit armor. I was excited by this as I might win finally!

As my opponent got lower in structure, I stopped my ship, preparing to make an attempt at catching his pod. His ship blew up, showing his pod. I quickly locked and pointed it. Setting orbit, I decided to web also just in case he tried to fly out of range of the scram. Being in a private convo already, I asked what his pod was worth to him. Unfortuneately for me, it was worthless due to him being podded shortly prior to our match by a gate camp. I exlaimed in ally chat that I had a pod locked and if I should let it go due to being worthless or pop it. Many people claimed the pilot could be lieing, others said just blow it. I chose to take this pod kill, being my first one. He gf'd and I docked up for a few mins to make notes.

Afterwards, the pilot was quiet in our private convo, so I apologized and donated 25misk to his funds to buy new implants due to his pod loss at a gate camp. Ive died to those before and felt bad for podding him this time, even though he lost nothing except a new clone. He thanked me and I logged off to make it to the birthday party on time.

Take Away Things
The most important thing I learned from this fight was that even in a fairly safe spot, I need to keep moving or not undock until I am read for a 1v1 setup fight. That slicer pilot could have easily been someone else outside the Hatchery who could have gotten 2 kills. I appreciate the fact there is still some honor in the pirates of New Eden, but I certainly will not expect this kind of respect from everyone, or even all Hatchery members every time.

Second, I really like the improvement in tracking and damage the different rigs provide, yet I am uncomfortable about the amount of ehp I lose in trading out the trimarks. The fit I used for this fight also did not have a repper, as I had forgotten to buy those earlier in the day getting supplied. The extra plate helped negate some of the lost ehp, which made me feel somewhat better, but I dont feel it will save me in the future, so a repper will be needed. I also looked into autocannons and I just dont like them. I dont like getting thousands of ammo compared to buying a few crystals that last just as long.

I feel I kind of cheated by fighting such a new player, but I hope HE learned something from the fight as well. All in all, a kill is a kill; so in the end it doesnt matter how I got it.

Punisher and Slicer

After reading the few comments on previous posts, I took them to heart and adjusted things a bit. I tried again with Aeth in a punisher, and he brought out a shield tanked Rifter. I lost this one due to my focusing more on trying to overheat my guns and in the process of wondering why his shields werent going down, forgot to switch to my MF crystals, causing me to do less damage than I should have been doing. I could have done better that fight, but I was distracted by trying to click the little green bar to overheat. Shortcut made, mistake wont happen again.

My next fight was more interesting, for me at least. I spent some time the previous fight to find out what kind of speeds the Rifter was putting out. It was a bit above what I was able to track effectively, so I switched out some rigs. The shield tanking had bothered me some also. Due to being tired of running around several systems to pick up items, I decided to use my already fit Slicer. Sending a message to my ol' buddy Aeth, we met up at a safe, about 30km from each other.

From previous fights, I figured out Rifters move fast. Really fast. So I did not bother with Scorch crystals this time, as those few seconds switching to MFs were costing me in a negative way. Very quickly, the Rifter was in range, about 1km, as usual. However, I had a Slicer fit with an AB and scram this time. The AB allowed to get and keep range at about 2500m, where Ive been trying to get. Getting point going, I turned on my DC2, lasers and Nos. I chewed through his shields very quickly, as he did mine also. When we each hit armor, he had much much better rep than me. At one point, I got him to about 50% armor, when I saw it spike at least 10% between my volleys. My armor just kept going down. And down. My volleys broke through his armor and I think I got the Rifter to about half structure by the time I was popped into my pod.

So these two fights, I learned a bit. Giving up some Trimark rigs for some better tracking and damage, helped immensely on the Slicer. I was able to hit accurately and for a good amount. Had he came in his shield tanked fit, I feel this fight could have been mine. Second thing I learned is that the Slicer is not just an upgraded Punisher. It is extremely fast, similar to the Rifter. Had I fit beam lasers, I could have sat at 15-20km orbiting and may have won. I think I will try the different rigs on a punisher and see how it helps or hurts the performance of it.

Overall, this was an exspensive lesson at about 35 million or so. Gotta love how the insurance agents just laughs when you lose a faction ship! =)

Future Plans

I have spent most of my afternoon trying to decide what type of ship to focus on. I want to fly a ship that pretty to look at, which eliminates the Gallente and Minmatar ships; which are hideous imo. Being Amarr, I already fly these, and love their appearance. Caldari ships are pretty slick too, yet my first encounter with another player ship in pvp was a Rifter. I swiftly got stomped and trained Minmatar frigs to 4. I did not like the cannons and ammo though; so I am going to focus on the Amarr ships. Having Minmatar frigs trained is pretty helpful it turns out in my choice.

When I first joined New Eden, I saw a link to an Ashimmu; an amazingly beautiful and dangerous ship. I quickly trained the cruiser skills to fly it, building the funds to buy it and quickly realized after getting in the cockpit, I couldnt actually "fly" this wonderful ship with my lack of gunnery, support, and core skills. Plenty of time has passed since then and I can safely fly this ship with an acceptable fit. However, I dont have one as part of my assets anymore, being sold long ago, but I digress.

After looking more into the Blood Raider ships and lore, I found the Cruor and Bhalgorn as well. These guys apparently are a sect of extremist Amarrian pirates who believe that clones have "purer" blood than normal, explaining why they drain their enemies corpses dry of blood, in effect giving them their name; the Blood Raiders.

First, the Blood Raiders are Amarrian, not some corporate agnostic race like the Caldari. Second, taking technology from the enslaved Minmatar (lol at their "technology"), they enhanced Amarrian ships to drain capacitor as if it were the life force of their enemies (The Amarr Navy). In essence, capacitor *is* the life energy for Amarr ships. So it works out. Thrid, this factions ships are just beautiful looking. They are easily recognizeable and many people know how dangerous they can be if you see one on the horizon.

So I am going to focus my skills now towards enhancing these ships and what their roles are; draining cap, webbing and blowing ships up. The downside to this plan is that these ships are exspensive! 70 million minimum for the Cruor. Ashimmu's are roughly 150million, and I havent even looked at the pricing for the Bhaalgorn yet. At prices like these, I definately need to get better, quickly, at pvp. I will start by aquiring a couple Cruors and getting a fit for them that I like. Soon though, I will need to find a BPO for the Cruor and Ashimmu, or at least find out who to get the copies from.

On a side note, I have been debating with myself about leaving H.UNG and WI. I joined them as a miner and my focus in the world has changed. My chosen ship types dont mesh well with their fleets that go one when Im online (shield mostly) I feel I am not adding anything useful to the corp or the alliance right now. This has nothing to do with our losses or gains in the North, its just a personal observation of myself that I am considering. Also, the fact that "The Hatchery" honored the 1v1 fight I had, makes me interested in doing more against them.

What to do with an AFK'r in a Forcefield?

So I logged back in and something I noticed earlier while roaming and now is that there are alot of people who sit in a POS forefield that has defense guns. What can I do to counter this? Will an Abaddon with a max turret range of about 150km, will this make a difference if I target and shoot the afk'er? If I can get the starbase passcode, can I bump the afk'er out of range of the guns?

These questions and more need answers! Its off to find the wizard, the wonderful wizard of EVE!

Here and Back again

Yay, Im finally back in New Eden after taking care of my mothers house while she was out of town for the last month or two. Yeah, she has internet, but after losing my Orca, I was none to happy to be on EVE for awhile. So I came back last night actually, spending most of the evening getting my stuff organized in Branch since I missed the move out. I jump cloned back to Amarr and made the 20 jump trip to Molden Heath today.

After spending several hours looking for a challenge of a fight, I finally found one. I was flying back and forth trying to catch a rifter pilot, but he was always closely followed by a Drake or Hurricane; forcing me to warp back to a nearby safe I had made upon arriving.  Apparently, his corpmates took notice, and one of them invited me to a 1v1 frig fight, which is what I was wanting anyhow. So I hesitantly accepted this challenge, joined his fleet and warped to him at 10km.

As I warped in, I saw the Rifter; a tried and true ship for pvp. I knew right away that he was either going to try to kite me or fight in close with his cannons. There would be no chance at keeping up, giving me plenty of usage out of my scorch crystals overheated range. Or he would get under my guns, and I would be praying for hits using my INMF crystals. I was glad he chose to stay close because I was not using an afterburner, which ended up being detrimental for me throughout the fight.

I could not for the life of me, get out of the 1k-1500m range. With an optimal of roughly 2400 on my lasers and a falloff of about 500, I would not be landing strong enough hits so close. As he chewed through my shields in 3 or 4 volleys, he smacked into my armor as I began to start pulsing my repper. Soon, I was at 50% armor, looking to get aligned to warp out, however, I noticed the Rifter was also missing a nice chunk of armor. Realizing that I had broke his shield tank, I decided to stay in til the end, its either me or him!

Well, it was me who popped. Aligning when I hit structure, my pod remained in tact. I thanked and gf'd him as he did me. Yet, Im not sure if he had cloaked friends nearby who were watching the fight or if he was relaying what was happening on vent, but when the fight was over, local filled with GF from almost all 15ish people there. I was surprised by this because there were a couple people who said "best frig 1v1 they've seen in a long time". Well, I lost the ship, but I felt pretty good about it.

Take Away Things:
This is something I decided to do to focus a section of my posts where I need to learn something. I think most of my posts have just been stories and thats all and good, but its more difficult to quickly recover my thoughts that I need to keep in mind throughout each fight. Basically a "What did I learn" section.

For this fight, I really wasnt able to keep range in my optimal. I was doing less damage because of it. I had equipped a scram instead of the AB with the plan to prevent my prey from running away when low on remaining structure. To counter this, I think I need to change the guns Ive got to something with more falloff. I dont think the tracking differences will hurt me that much until I find a ship with drones. Had I had a larger falloff or was at 2500m, I am confident I would have one this fight.

As for finding prey, I moved to Molden Heath in hopes of finding plenty of fights. What I found were people who docked up (21 people in 3 station system, all except 2 were docked), ships too strong for me to think of fighting with a punisher (Drake, Hurricane) and people who would sit afk in their POS forcefields. That last one really bothers me, as I couldnt get in there to bump them out, let alone live through some of those defense lasers (which I escaped from several times)

All in all, lots of time spent finding a fight that was fun and good but still a loss. Im going to stay in this area and soon I plan to have a kill rather than a loss mail.
